The years are short

The days are long, but the years are short.

We've heard it all before, because it's true. Your life including baby transforms into something magical. It is faster, slower, crazy, clear, tiring, and energizing, all at once. I spend my days chronicling Dashiell's every move, trying to hold on to every moment, because I know that one day, much too soon, it will feel like it was just yesterday. I even have a mental file for the smell of his sweet, milky breath and the soft sighs he sings in his sleep. So while we are often on the go, taking trips here and there, I feel like our life is playing like a slow motion film. We spend our days hopping around from place to place, nomads in our own world. Scheduled, but unscheduled.

It's such the paradox, isn't it? This babyland we are in? Is it one that only a mother could understand? Anyway, whatever it is, this is our new style.

Here we are at a secret little spot that we love sneaking off to. It's part cafe, part art exhibit. "A playful collision of spaces," is what they say about themselves. Seemed fitting for this particular post.

P.S. The Art of Cooking exhibit is on display until August 1st. Go see it, if you can. In fact, visit this little place for some breakfast or some tea, if you have never been. They are closing their doors permanently come this summer.

P.P.S. We couldn't resist taking home this little gem. Doesn't she look delicious? Mini egg tarts have been one of my favorite desserts since I was a little girl.

Lessons in food

It was cold and stormy this past weekend. I suppose we had it coming after approx. three gorgeously sunny weekends in the high 70s. It was the perfect backdrop for a rich, decadent brunch that warms you from the inside.

Sharing my love for good food with Dashiell is now a favorite. Something I love. Food tells stories, histories, creates memories. At home, I wear him while I prepare meals, rubbing spices between my fingers for him to smell. And when we fancy ourselves a meal out, Dash can sit with us and be a part of our experience.

On this day, as is the norm, I studied the menu for a good long while, describing the flavors and pairings aloud for Dash to hear. This time, he was much too busy studying the rain to hear what his mama had to say. 'Tis somewhat of a novelty when you're a Southern California baby. But once the food arrived, Dash stared longingly at the plates, looked at Daddy with sheer jealousy as he tore into the sweet, pillowy sticky buns, and tried to steal crunchy bites of truffle honey laced fried chicken from this mama's mouth. And like many of our meals, this one ended with dessert. There is always, always room for dessert. Perhaps the most important lesson of all. We left and promptly went home, crawled into bed, and slept away the food coma. It was a wonderful way to spend the rainy day.

Sling Diaries

I have the most wonderful news this morning. Dashiell and I, along with 12 other mamas, have been invited to participate in The Sling Diaries. A Sakura Bloom project hosted by Leigh of Marvelous Kiddo. Each month, for the next six (!), we will be creating a photo diary of sorts, documenting our love for babywearing.

I am a little intimidated, if we are being honest. But mostly, I am honored to be a part of this community. Mothers, who know firsthand what it means to have their hearts living outside of them, but still close to them. The next six months will be beautiful and inspiring. Will you join us?

Follow Sakura Bloom on Pinterest, as they pin some of their favorite Sling Diary photos, check in at Marvelous Kiddo for updates and giveaways, and of course, follow the blogs of all the mamas on this journey.

More details at Marvelous Kiddo. While you're there, enter to win one of three Sakura Bloom slings! It would be a lovely present for yourself or a lucky mama or papa.

P.S. Want to know something silly? Tim and I sometimes roshambo to see who gets to wear Dash when we're out and about :)

P.P.S. The Sakura Bloom sling is a baby must have.

Me, this morning, wrangling Dash as we pack for our trip. Send us happy flying baby thoughts today!
